Renewing your driver licence To ensure your licence is renewed in good time, we now issue all application packs four months before the expiry date. Once you receive the form from us, please apply to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) for a criminal records check. We also recommend that you also register with the DBS Update service to prevent any further delays in the future: subscribers to this service won't be required to apply for a new disclosure when renewing their licence, which eliminates the risk of delays in the processing of applications. This also saves money on the cost of a new disclosure certificate. A disclosure will only be required where a change has occurred. More details about the DBS Update Service are available on our Licensing information page.

An English language requirement applies to all applications for private hire drivers licences received by TfL on, or after, 14 October 2016.
This includes applications for both renewal and new licences.
It is essential for public safety that all licensed private hire drivers are able to communicate in English at an appropriate level. Drivers need to be able to communicate with passengers to discuss a route or fare, as well as read, understand and respond to important regulatory, safety and travel information sent by TfL.
Since 14 October 2016, all applicants for a private hire driver's licence have been required to be able to communicate in English to a B1 standard.
A transitional process is in place and applicants for new licences and renewals have until 30 April 2019 to provide evidence that they meet the English language requirement. For applications received after 30 April 2019, applicants will have to provide evidence that they meet the English language requirement as part of their application before a licence will be issued.
We are looking to introduce an English language test which is more relevant to the role of a private hire driver, but which remains at B1 standard. For example, including bespoke material with language and vocabulary that directly relates to the role and responsibilities of a private hire driver. We will provide further details in due course. You must be medically fit which means meeting the DVLA Group 2 medical standards. In most cases, this will mean that you will have to undergo a medical examination with someone who has access to your full medical records.

The guidelines and their development
The drivers’ medical section within the DVLA deals with all aspects of driver licensing when there are medical conditions that impact, or potentially impact, on safe control of a vehicle.
To do this, the DVLA develops and works within guidance, and this publication summarises the national medical guidelines on fitness to drive. It is intended to assist doctors and other healthcare professionals in advising their patients:
whether or not the DVLA requires notification of a medical condition what the licensing outcome from the DVLA’s medical enquiries is likely to be Some of the guidelines – for example, those around diabetes mellitus, epilepsy and vision – are set against legislative requirements (see Appendix A for details) but others are the result of advice from the six Honorary Medical Advisory Panels to the Secretary of State, which cover:
cardiology
neurology
diabetes
vision
alcohol or substance misuse and dependence
psychiatry
Each panel consists of acknowledged experts in the relevant area and includes DVLA and lay membership. The panels meet biannually and, between meetings, give continual advice to the Secretary of State and the DVLA.
This guide is also available as a PDF.
The medical standards are continually reviewed and updated when indicated in light of recent developments in medicine generally, and traffic medicine in particular. Download PDF Medical Guidance
